The Victim Impact Statement is a description that a victim provides to the court (in their own words) that tells exactly how their life has been affected and/or changed as a result of a crime. The statement can be oral or written and can describe any financial, physical, and important emotional effects that you, or others within your family, have experienced.
Victim impact statements are considered the most effective way to ensure that your voice as a victim is heard prior to any sentencing actions by the court. It also provides a victim with the opportunity to share your opinion on what should be included in a defendant’s sentence or disposition (i.e. jail/prison time, community service, treatment programs, probation conditions, etc.)
